There is a “micro” trend going on right now that I just have to share with you! I know we don’t talk a lot about trends at The Red Lip Society. We focus a lot on capsule wardrobes and classic style here.

I have been seeing bag charms here and there this past year. I didn’t pay much attention to them until one day one caught my eye! I was instantly enamored with the thought of it hanging on my hand bag. It brought me pure joy!

Also called the “Birkin Effect”, adding scarves, your favorite key chains, even bracelets, etc. is a fun way to add personality. It gives a touch of individuality to your favorite bag. And that is what this micro trend is all about.

Why is it called the Birkin Effect?

The Birkin Effect refers to Jane Birkin, a British-French actress, singer, and style icon of the 60’s and 70’s. The Hermes Birkin bag was not only named for her, but designed for her as well.

These days people buy Birkin bags as investment pieces and some never see the light of day. But Jane carried everyday items in hers. The bag would be stuffed full, overflowing with her odds and ends. It was also covered in charms, scarves, etc. Most people that own one today would never!

How to style my bag charms?

What I really love about this bag charm trend is the freedom. There are no rules! Want to have just one? Use one! Want 100? Use 100. I mean 100 of them probably wouldn’t be my personal choice. But hey, like I said, there aren’t any rules with this trend.

Try adding a scarf that compliments your outfit as well as a bag charm or two. I want a scarf, bag charm, and a chain option for a bag. I can totally see that complimenting a jeans and heels look!

Whatever you choose. your bag charms should be a representation of who you are and what you like. They should make you smile!
