“I just can’t wear red lipstick. It doesn’t look good on me. I wish I could wear that color!”
I hear things like this from other women all the time. As the name of this page suggests, I love a bold, red lip. It is my favorite accessory!
Any woman can wear red lipstick! That’s right, even you, sister! You just have to know how to find the right shade for you.
Today we are breaking down different shades, what skin tones they work best with, and the best way to apply it.
How to Choose the Right Shade for You
The first step in choosing the perfect red lipstick is understanding your skin tone. Do you have cool undertones or warm undertones? It is very easy to know.
Turn your hand palm side up. Look at your wrists. If your veins appear blue or purple, you are cool-toned. If your veins appear green, you are warm-toned.
I have compiled some choices for you below if you are looking to buy a tone that suits you. I tried to choose a range of prices to fit every budget.
If you are a cool-tone, cool-toned lipstick has more of a blue undertone. To shop, click on the numbers below the picture.

If your skin has a warm-tone, warm-toned lipstick has more of an orange undertone. To shop, click on the numbers below the picture.

If you really want the color to pop, you can absolutely go for the opposite of your skin tone. But if you want a shade to look like it is made for you, go for a shade that matches your skin tone. You will automatically look chicer.
How to Apply the Perfect Red Lip
First, are you drinking enough water? When we are dehydrated our lips suffer. They will appear dry and cracked. It won’t matter what lipstick you choose, that is a problem that must be fixed from the inside out.
I am a big fan of lip scrub. I use this one every day. Apply it, and rub your lips together a bit. Then rinse it off.
After you gently pat your lips dry you will want to apply a moisturizer/lip balm. I like to let this sit on my lips while I do the rest of my face so it can soak in.
Lip liner is important because not only does it help guide where the lipstick goes, but it also helps keep the lipstick from bleeding off of the lips and onto the skin. Some people like to choose a darker liner to really outline the lip. Personally, I like a more classic lip or a French lip. I choose a liner as close to my shade as possible, one shade darker at the most. The Cupid’s bow and the pout I over line just a tad while the rest of my lip I stay on the line. This gives me a little more of a pout.
Whether using a brush or applying the lipstick straight from the bullet, start in the middle and work your way out. If your lipstick has bled a little outside of the lines, take a flat, thin brush and clean it up with a touch of concealer.
* Bonus Tip
It is good practice to apply your red lip before applying your eye makeup or blush/bronzer. The red lip should be the main attraction on your face and doing the rest of your makeup last will help you to not over do other areas.
I hope you find these tips helpful and, that if you have been hesitant to try a red lip, you now feel more confident in giving it a try! Tag me in your red lips over on IG or hashtag it #theredlipsociety. – XOXO Scarlett
