There are certain meals that feel like they belong to a slower kind of evening—something simmering on the stove, a table set without hurry, and a recipe that doesn’t need to be complicated to be memorable.

Brunswick stew is exactly that kind of dish.
Rich, smoky, and deeply comforting, it’s a Southern classic that brings together simple ingredients in a way that feels both practical and quietly special.
Serve it with warm biscuits (especially these sourdough discard drop biscuits), and you have the kind of dinner that feels like home.
Tools I Used
Ingredients
- 2 cups cooked shredded chicken (rotisserie works beautifully)
- 2 cups pulled pork (leftover BBQ preferred)
- 4 cups chicken broth
- 1 (28 oz) can crushed tomatoes
- 1 medium onion, chopped
- 2 medium potatoes, diced
- 1 cup corn
- 1 cup lima beans (butter beans)
- 1 cup okra
- ½ cup BBQ sauce
- 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1–2 tbsp brown sugar
- 1 tsp smoked paprika
- 1 tsp hot sauce (optional)
- Salt + pepper to taste
Instructions
- In a large pot or Dutch oven, combine chicken, pulled pork, chicken broth, and crushed tomatoes
- Bring to a gentle simmer over medium heat
- Add onion, potatoes, corn, okra, and lima beans
- Stir in BBQ sauce, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, smoked paprika, and hot sauce
- Season with salt and pepper
- Cover and simmer for 45–60 minutes, stirring occasionally

- Allow the stew to thicken as the potatoes soften and break down
- Taste and adjust seasoning before serving
Tips for the Best Brunswick Stew
- Use leftover BBQ meat for deeper flavor
- Let it rest 20–30 minutes before serving—it thickens beautifully
- If too thick, add a splash of broth
- If too thin, simmer uncovered a bit longer
- It tastes even better the next day

A Note from Me
I’ve always believed that the best meals aren’t necessarily the most complicated ones—they’re the ones that invite you to slow down, take a breath, and pull up a chair to a table that feels like home.
This is the kind of recipe you make when you want something warm, familiar, and just a little bit special without trying too hard.
And somehow, those are always the ones that stay with you.
