Summer Essentials for the Classic Woman: Style, Simplicity, and Spirit

There’s something about summer that invites a sense of renewal. The days are longer, the light is softer, and the pace—hopefully—a little slower. It’s the perfect season to embrace simplicity while still honoring your signature style. Whether you’re planning seaside getaways or savoring slower mornings at home, here are my tried-and-true summer essentials that keep things effortless, elegant, and anchored in grace.

1. A Flattering Sundress

A lightweight, well-fitted sundress is the cornerstone of summer chic. Look for breathable fabrics like cotton or linen in timeless silhouettes—think fit-and-flare or midi wrap styles. Bonus points for stripes, florals, or soft neutrals that pair easily with your accessories. This is your go-to piece for brunch, church, or impromptu coffee dates.

2. The Perfect Red Lip (of course)

Summer makeup should be light and glowing, but a red lip still has its place. Opt for a lightweight matte or stain that won’t melt in the heat. L’Oréal’s Infallible Matte Liquid Lipstick in a warm red tone is one of my favorites—it’s bold, long-wearing, and never too heavy.

3. Oversized Sunglasses

There’s nothing more effortlessly glamorous than a pair of oversized sunglasses. Not only do they protect your eyes, they instantly elevate any outfit (even if you’re just wearing jeans and a tee). Look for classic black, tortoiseshell, or soft blush frames that complement your face shape. I have had a pair of oversized Michael Kors glasses for close to twenty years and I still love them! I recently got a pair of tortoise shell, Ray-Ban Wayfarer’s. I love the classic shape of them!

4. A Wide-Brim Hat

Equal parts practical and polished, a straw hat is essential for those sun-drenched days. Whether you’re poolside, gardening, or exploring a new city, a wide-brim hat offers both style and sun protection. It’s an accessory that whispers old-Hollywood elegance.

5. A Faith-Filled Journal or Devotional

Summer is a beautiful time to connect with the Lord through reflection and rest. Keep a journal or devotional handy—perhaps something light and encouraging you can carry to the beach or on your travels. I love writing morning prayers or gratitude notes with a cup of coffee or iced tea in hand.

6. Comfortable, Stylish Sandals

Let’s leave the plastic flip-flops behind. A good pair of leather sandals or espadrilles can carry you from day to evening with ease. Look for neutral tones (tan, ivory, or metallics) that complement your wardrobe without sacrificing comfort.

7. A Chic Tote Bag

Summer calls for a catch-all tote. Whether you’re headed to the farmer’s market or a weekend getaway, a roomy, structured bag in canvas or woven straw fits the bill. Bonus if it fits your Bible, journal, water bottle, and a few fresh blooms.

Final Thoughts
Summer doesn’t have to mean sacrificing style or spiritual depth. In fact, it’s a beautiful opportunity to blend the two. With just a few intentional pieces, you can look and feel your best while savoring the slower rhythms of the season.
